This year, the Blue Angels Homecoming show happened to fall on our sons 3rd birthday. With our oldest in school, we thought it would be the perfect place to spend a day. Like most 3 year old boys, nothing can be better than airplanes and Blue Angels! Living, quite literally, in the Blue Angels backyard, I’m fortunate enough to see (and hear!) an air show all year long. We watch them practice their maneuvers from the beach and from our backyard. I wouldn’t say that I’ve taken them for granted, but I have gotten used to them just being part of my everyday. Let me tell you…nothing compares to seeing them up close and personal.
In years past, we have always watched the show from a little beach on base right next to the Marina. I’m not a big fan of crowds with my kids usually, so this has suited me just perfectly. Until now. I was just so impressed with this air show! Seeing the ground explosions, getting to go inside the aircraft and just being a part of the crowd, felt so good and incredibly patriotic. I got goosebumps when the F-16 roared over my head (um. ps. I love jet noise) and shed more than a few tears during the tribute flight. I almost started belting out “God Bless America” right then and there. Yes. It was that moving.
I went to this show knowing that I was going to give my little guy a really spectacular day out for his birthday. I just didn’t realize that I would end up with a newly renewed appreciation and pride for our very own US Navy Blue Angels. I’m so honored they call Pensacola home.
